WAEC Math Study Guide 2026

WAEC Mathematics
Areas of Concentration 2026

Mathematics is the most feared subject in WAEC, but it doesn't have to be. Discover the core topics WAEC repeats every year and the exact strategy to score an A1.

The Truth: You Don't Need to Be a Math Genius to Pass.

Every year, brilliant students fail WAEC Mathematics because they spend months reading topics that carry only 2 marks, while completely ignoring the topics that carry 12 marks.

The WAEC Mathematics Theory paper is divided into Part A (Compulsory) and Part B (Choose 5). To pass, you must understand how WAEC structures Part B. The questions in Part B are heavy, 12-mark questions drawn from a very specific set of topics. If you master just 5 of these core topics, you have already secured a B3 or A1.

At Examspot, we don't just give you the topics. Our VIP Mentorship provides you with compiled past questions on these exact topics, complete with the step-by-step working that WAEC examiners demand.

Most Repeated WAEC Math Topics (2026)

Based on our analysis of the last 15 years of WAEC past questions, these are the areas you must focus your reading timetable on.

1. Statistics (Guaranteed 12 Marks)

  • What to read: Mean, Median, Mode of grouped data. Drawing Histograms and Cumulative Frequency Curves (Ogives).
  • Why it matters: WAEC sets a Statistics question in Part B every single year. Mastering the class boundaries table guarantees you 12 easy marks.

2. Circle Geometry (Theorems)

  • What to read: Angle at the center, Angles in the same segment, Cyclic quadrilaterals, and Tangents to a circle.
  • Why it matters: This is tested in both the Objective section and Theory. You must state the theorem used in brackets to get your full marks.

3. Trigonometry & Bearings

  • What to read: Angles of Elevation and Depression, Sine Rule, Cosine Rule, and 3-point Compass Bearings.
  • Why it matters: Bearings are heavily repeated. If your initial diagram is wrong, the entire calculation fails.

4. Commercial Arithmetic

  • What to read: Simple and Compound Interest, Depreciation, Percentages, Profit and Loss.
  • Why it matters: This usually appears in Part A (Compulsory). It tests your basic everyday calculation skills.

5. Algebraic Processes & Graphs

What to read: Quadratic equations, Simultaneous equations, Sets, and Inequalities. Drawing quadratic graphs to find roots.

Study Tip: WAEC frequently asks you to solve a quadratic equation graphically, and then use the same graph to solve a related linear equation. Knowing how to draw a smooth curve is essential.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I pass WAEC Mathematics easily?+

The easiest way to pass is to target the 12-mark questions in Part B. If you can perfectly solve a Statistics question, a Bearing question, and a Quadratic Graph, you have already gathered 36 marks before even touching the Compulsory Part A or the Objective section.

Does WAEC repeat Mathematics past questions?+

WAEC rarely repeats the exact same numbers, but they always repeat the format. A question on finding the mean of a grouped data set from 2015 will be solved using the exact same formula and table format in 2026, just with different numbers. This is why our VIP Mentorship focuses heavily on WAEC's specific solving methods.

What happens if my final answer is wrong in WAEC Math?+

WAEC examiners use a "Method Mark" (M) and "Accuracy Mark" (A) system. If you use the correct formula and show your workings, you will get the Method Marks even if your final calculator answer is wrong. However, if you just write the final answer without showing workings, you get zero.
